Artist Statement
I draw inspirations from different places and objects in any given time. Inspiration comes out my consistent and diligent effort; looking at and attempting to recreate and imitate visual qualities that I admire. I feel that imitation is important to develop one’s sensibility and recognize that a good artist is one who steals and uses whatever they can to make the most compelling image. Images sometimes suggest other images and open up a new visual image that could be developed and materialized. I look to past artists and periods in order deepen my knowledge and realize the possibilities of what art can do. Music can also be inspirational because the pulsations of rhythm and qualities of sound can be translated into abstract notations. There is a parallel that could be drawn in the way that sound and image infuse life into matter.
In my own work, I intentionally distort features and bodies to increase the expressive potency of their character. I like to isolate and combine forms to create a narrative that is psychologically provocative. I feel that images now should be cut down and abbreviated so information is condensed into a tight and cohesive structure. I don’t have a coherent philosophy of life or theory about the way an image should come off. I simply have the instinct for drawing, and an idea of the type of images I want to make that intrigue me and suggest new possibilities.
